Derek Johnson is the author of six books, including Husky Football in the Don James Era, The Dawgs of War, Bow Down to Willingham, The Husky Hitman, and Rooting From Afar. ESPN's Lee Corso praised the Don James book, when he said "I know that not only Washington fans but all college football fans will enjoy Derek Johnson's book.  It's a great read.  I loved it!" Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times wrote,  "Derek Johnson's book is an essential addition to the library of any Husky fan. It chronicles an unforgettable, championship chapter in the history of Northwest sports-- much of it in the words and recollections of the people  who made history."

Over the years, Johnson has interviewed and chronicled many sports figures, including Adrian Peterson, Aaron Rodgers, Ronnie Lott, Kenny Easley, Brandon Roy, Marques Tuiasosopo, Steve Emtman, Lincoln Kennedy, Napoleon Kaufman, Warren Moon and Andre Dillard.
